When Disney Pictures offered Reel FX Creative Studios the opportunity to participate in the production of their latest animated project, they jumped at it. And why not? Disney gave the Dallas-based award-winning studio, free rein to conceptualize, visualize and animate the opening sequence of the animated picture "The Wild". Reel FX was confident that with the IRIDAS FrameCycler, and NVIDIA Quadro FX by PNY graphic boards forming an integral part of the production pipeline, their creative team would have the tools they needed to create a dynamic opening, on time and on budget.

Reel FX used an innovative mix of 2D & 3D animation, to create a theatrical dream sequence for the opening of "The Wild". Thanks to the freedom afforded them by Disney and the effectiveness of the tools used by Reel FX, the result is a highly original self-contained sequence that sets the stage for the rest of the film. "We wanted to produce a conceptually very designed, very art directed fantasy sequence," said Dale Carman, chief visioneer at Reel FX Creative Studios. "Our idea was to create a 2D look like "Fantasia" but with CGI. To achieve this we knew we would have to push the creative envelope." |

"All of our animators can view their animations in real-time at full resolution as they work. This is critical, because if it takes too long to render or view an animation, it limits creativity," said Carman. Since FrameCycler plays files in their native format there is no time lost rendering out low-res QuickTimes just to see their work. "FrameCycler allows our artists to build play lists and review the animations in sequence; longer sequences can be played back directly from-disk in real time. It all adds up to improving our workflow and making it easier for our animators to do reviews whenever they need to," explains Carman.

Reel FX will be using the powerful combination of FrameCycler and NVIDIA Quadro FX in upcoming projects including: FX driven commercials for Gatorade and Nike airing for the World Cup and a design driven music video for chart topping, Phil Vassar. |
