John's Bio

Three things in life make me happy: photography, writing and traveling. Since I was a kid, I wanted to travel and see the world. I was fascinated to watch adventurers like Jacques Cousteau and National Geographic documentaries on TV.

Growing up in a suburb of Athens, Greece, I didn't limit myself. I always loved traveling during the summers on the mainland and the islands. As I grew older, I managed to create contacts and find opportunities to take me away from home, wandering and exploring the rest of world.

My love for photography came later when I worked for UNHCR and Samaritan's Purse on the Greek borders to provide humanitarian aid to refugees fleeing from the Middle East to Europe. I decided to buy a camera after I'd started documenting life in transit camps with my iPhone.

My goal is to create evocative images of the places and people I visit that will touch the human soul. That said, I discovered my creative side when I traveled to New York. This city is so inspiring for an artist — it gives you so many opportunities to open and expand your horizons! I am also grateful for all of the beautiful people I met there.

I love helping others. After what Covid19 has done to our lives, I have devoted time to helping new photographers and young entrepreneurs start their own photo studio business. Setting up a photography studio has many advantages. For more information, visit my website johnmakphotography.com.
